OSOT Responds to FSCO Report of Five Year Review of Auto Insurance

OSOT has responded to the Minister of Finance's consultation on the Financial Services Commission of Ontario's Report on the Five Year Review of Automobile Insurance, May 31, 2009This report can be viewed at FSCO`s website.

The report makes sweeping recommendations (39 in total!) to reform the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule, a regulation which defines benefits and administration of auto insurance, including access to medical rehabilitation benefits.  Critical recommendations will limit access to benefits particularly for those with serious injuries not deemed catastrophic whose benefit entitlement is proposed to be reduced from $100,000 to $25,000.  Further recommendations intended to curb excessive assessment in the sector have the perhaps unintended impact of severely limiting the potential for occupational therapists to work in the sector.

OSOT has taken strong positions to protect consumers` access to benefits and needed OT services.  See OSOT's response of May 15, 2009.  OSOT will continue to advocate our positions and monitor government reactions and feedback.  It is expected that the Minister's recommendations will be released this summer.

Appreciation is extended to OSOT's Auto Insurance Sector Team and to the many members who contributed to OSOT's response development - members working for members - the very best of association workings!
