Description of Opportunity

This is a temporary full time position working 35 hours per week for up to twelve (12) months.

Purpose:

Working in a multi-disciplinary model, the Occupational Therapist supports parents and/caregivers with their infant’s specific needs specializing motor and oral motor development.

Preferred Background:

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor of Science degree or Master of Science in Occupational Therapy. Eligibility for membership or membership in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario is required. Preference will be given to those with experience  working with children with complex motor or feeding needs, experience in coaching parents/caregivers in community settings and clinical experience with at risk or developmentally disabled children from birth to five years of age. A minimum of three (3) years experience in an early intervention program, working with infants, is required. The position requires the ability to work collaboratively with formal and informal community service systems/resources.Time management abilities, verbal and written communication skills, coaching and consultation skills with families, care providers and other professionals in the field are required. The successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility and  the ability to work both independently and as a part of a team. Computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite are required. Fluency in French or a second language other than English is an asset.

Working Conditions:

The successful candidate will be made an offer of employment on condition that the Regional Municipality of Halton receives a current (obtained within the past six (6) months), original and acceptable Criminal Records Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Screen by the first day of employment. Travel will be required, incumbent must provide their own transportation. Flexibility in working hours will be required. The incumbent will be required to provide a copy of their driver’s license by their first day of employment.

The successful candidate will be made an offer of employment on the condition of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and able to provide proof of vaccination. Fully vaccinated is defined as having received the completed series of an accepted COVID-19 vaccine, as recommended by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health and having received the final dose at least 14 days before your employment start date.

The candidate will be asked to provide the Region with proof of full vaccination, prior to their employment start date. Acceptable proof is a Ministry of Health Dose Administration Receipt (or such other proof of vaccination that the Province of Ontario sanctions). This can be obtained through the Provincial portal - https://covid19.ontariohealth.ca/.

The requirement to be fully vaccinated is subject to the Ontario Human Rights Code. If the candidate is unable to vaccinate for a reason protected by the Code, a request for accommodation can be requested and written proof satisfactory to the Region will be required.

Duties:

  • Instructs, mentors and coaches parents and/or caregivers regarding their infant's specific disability and/or special needs, specializing in motor and oral motor development.
  • Consults with developmental consultant, other service providers and parents to develop individual Family Service Plans.
  • Develops and implements a treatment plan for each infant within the context of the Mediator/Coaching Model, reflecting a family centred approach.
  • Works in a multi-disciplinary model.
  • Administers appropriate assessments to obtain a developmental profile of each infant's strengths and needs.
  • Represents the Infant & Child Development Service in the community, participating in community in-services, education seminars, parent groups and committee work as required.
  • Liaises with Developmental Consultants, Resource Consultants, Behaviour Consultants and related Professionals.
  • Ensures that appropriate referrals are made to other community resources.
  • Maintains and updates databases related to service delivery and administration requirements.
  • Partners with external agencies in initiatives that enhance availability and accessibility of services for families.
  • Maintains ongoing professional knowledge and skills embedded in evidence based practices.
  • Performs other duties, including administrative duties related to Children’s Services and the broader Corporation, as required.
