PART 1: Introduction to 2SLGBTQ Clinical and Cultural Competencies Webinar

Description: A program of Sherbourne Health, Rainbow Health Ontario (RHO) creates opportunities for the healthcare system to better serve 2SLGBTQ communities. RHO offers evidence-based training for healthcare providers across the province to feel more clinically and culturally competent in caring for their 2SLGBTQ service users. In this webinar, you will be introduced to the unique health needs of the 2SLGBTQ community, be familiarized with RHO's course catalogue and other resources, and learn about the possible learning pathways to increase your 2SLGBTQ cultural and clinical competencies. Note: You may choose to attend part 1 only. The webinar will be recorded and the archived link will be available until May 31, 2023.

By the end of this webinar, you will better understand:

  • The unique needs of 2SLGBTQ community members in accessing health care.
  • The need for 2SLGBTQ specific health equity work.
  • How practitioners can seek out training opportunities to create and foster safer health and social service spaces.

PART 2: 2SLGBTQ Foundations Course

Format: 
Seven online modules for learning at your own pace must be completed by May 24, 2023

Description: Rainbow Health Ontario (RHO), a program of Sherbourne Health, developed this seven-module course on Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (2SLGBTQ) health for healthcare and social service providers. These modules will help build your foundational knowledge for providing care to 2SLGBTQ people. This course’s goal is to heighten your comfort level and competency in providing high quality inclusive, affirming, welcoming; culturally sensitive care. In the course you will build your understanding of important 2SLGBTQ terminology. You will also learn to understand the context of minority stress; health disparities faced by 2SLGBTQ people; and improve your ability to provide comprehensive care for your service users from diverse 2SLGBTQ communities.

Each module will take about 30 minutes to complete. The module’s activities are designed to inspire critical thinking about the course principles so you can apply your knowledge and skills in your daily practice. Each module will guide you to explore key concepts such as: sex; gender; gender identity; gender expression; intersectionality; mental health and inclusive language.

  • Concepts and terminology of sexual and gender minority people 
  • Beliefs, attitudes and their impacts on 2SLGBTQ people
  • Barriers to health access for 2SLGBTQ people
  • Physical needs of sexual and gender minorities
  • Mental health needs of 2SLGBTQ people
  • Intersectionality and 2SLGBTQ people
  • Inclusive communications and welcoming services for 2SLGBTQ people
  • Learn more about the module topics

Note: Completion of part 2 is mandatory to participate in part 3.

PART 3: Removing the Barriers: Making Your Organization 2SLGBTQ Friendly Webinar

Date and Time: May 31, 2023 | 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Presenters: Tanya Neumeyer (they/them) and Juan-Sebastian Ortiz (he/him; il), Rainbow Health Ontario (learn more about our presenters)

Description: To provide inclusive, affirming health care and social services it is crucial to have policies and practices that reflect the diverse clients' needs. To create change in an organization, it must be evident from board, senior management to front-line staff and volunteers. This session is a review of programs, services, website, images/posters, signage, brochures, publications, intake forms/registration forms, policy, etc. of the organization. The session uses an anti-oppression/anti-racism framework to examine the process of developing organizational sensitivity and responsiveness to diverse 2SLGBTQ communities. The session addresses creating a positive and welcoming work environment for both 2SLGBTQ staff, clients and volunteers. We will view various samples of inclusive practices and forms to make your organizational space more 2SLGBTQ friendly.

By the end of this webinar, you will better understand how to:

  • Enhance visibility and inclusion of 2SLGBTQ employees, volunteers, service users.
  • Increase capacity to provide welcoming, friendly, professional, culturally competent services to 2SLGBTQ service users.
  • Make your organization, service and programs 2SLGBTQ positive; including making policy, language, forms, signage, washroom use and waiting areas inclusive.
