When it comes to the science of psychology and behaviour change, we know that education alone and attempts at convincing people to change their thinking or behaviour is largely ineffective. We also know that treating psychology and unhelpful behaviours as “problems” to be solved can be harmful. We see much more success in shifting psychology and behaviour for the better when we can take a stance of compassionate curiosity. When we step into the role of Facilitator, our clients have a partner on their side as opposed to another “expert” who may or may not have the answers to solve their problems. In the facilitator role, we can support our clients to build self-awareness, experiment with new and flexible responses to challenging situations or symptoms, integrate new learning, and stay squarely in the driver’s seat of their recovery. This course is the perfect introduction to building a psychologically-informed practice.
We will draw on principles from Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in order to provide you with a 4-pillar framework for moving from “Fixer” to “Facilitator”. Upon completion of this course, participants will: PRESENCE – learn specific strategies for practicing the art of being present in the evolving relationship that exists in the treatment room. GENUINE CURIOSITY – learn how to notice the urge to offer our own explanations or narratives and choose questions or intentional language that guide reflection and encourage our clients to draw their own conclusions. EXPERIMENTATION– learn how to create experiential opportunities and provide individuals with the space to integrate new learning in ways that challenge fear, promote flexibility and bolster self-efficacy. SELF-DETERMINATION – Learn how to create collaborative goals and action plans with clients when prescriptive programs are falling short.
This live, 6-hour course is designed for rehabilitation, medical or psychotherapy clinicians and offers a framework based in physical rehabilitation principles. The course participant should be familiar with rehabilitation or physical frameworks for treating pain or distressing physical symptoms. Anyone with questions is encouraged to contact Reframe Rehab to discuss individual backgrounds and circumstances. North America Saturdays 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM EST • December 4, December 11
