Often after a stroke or brain injury, it is challenging to find a role for the more involved upper extremity (UE) while performing activities of daily living (ADLs). This virtual workshop combines an OT perspective with NDT principles to focus on UE recovery during activities of daily living. It will look at incorporating the more involved or hemiplegic UE into ADLs through using the UE in an active support role. This workshop will provide an opportunity to explore practical tips to engage the UE in active support during functional tasks while considering a variety of environments (e.g. at the bedside, in a wheelchair, at a table).
The workshop will contain a lecture, problem solving sessions and labs to aid in assessment of the UE and facilitation of the UE in active support while performing ADLs. The task/occupation, client goals and the client's environment will be considered. There is an optional lab component for those who would like to practice the skills learned and receive virtual feedback from the instructor. Should participants choose to participate in this option, they will need a second person who is available for the lab practice. Participants must be registered occupational therapists or therapy assistants.
