Functional Capacity Evaluations and Return to Work with Mental Health Conditions

Current research informs us that mental health conditions are very common - in particular trauma with unexpected illness or injury. People (we) are complex, heavily influenced by interconnecting individual systems (e.g. emotional, cognitive, sensory-perceptual) and the current environment. Subsequently it is challenging for us to assess and integrate all the information in a Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) or to facilitate a successful return to work (RTW). Return to work is therapeutic and I consider a Functional Capacity Evaluation brief therapy. This workshop focuses on the assessment and treatment of mental health conditions to facilitate a comprehensive FCE and sustainable return to work using the whole person MAC integrated model. Clinical case studies, video, small group discussion and clinical reasoning activities are used. Workshop materials include intervention resources, assessment tools and supporting research articles. Registration is limited to allow for small group learning.
Overview: Hierarchy of objective assessment tools for mental health conditions – psychological, social behavioral, cognitive. Includes trauma/PTSD, learning disabilities (ADHD), worry-fear-anxiety, depression, addictions. Individual beliefs/perceptions - ability/disability, self-efficacy (including mental health, cognitive, return to work), work environment. Strategies and treatment. FCE and RTW methods (including best effort – consistency). Translate assessment results and integrate findings to work functional ability. Strength based approach. Therapist factors. Coping styles, personality traits, cultural and family influences, workplace influences.

She has taught at the University of Manitoba for the College of Rehabilitation Sciences - Occupational Therapy and the Department of Extended Education, has conducted workshops through the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists and presented at numerous HR conferences across Canada.
