WSIB Non-Surgical Fracture Episode of Care Eligibility Criteria Expanded
In 2017, the WSIB launched the Non-Surgical Fracture Episode of Care (EOC), the first course of rehabilitation for people with non-surgical fractures. The EOC includes a payment model that bundles rehabilitation services and fees. The bundled plan includes an initial assessment and report, treatment, outcome measurement, communication and a summary report.
Effective February 5, 2018, WSIB has expanded the eligibility criteria for the Non-Surgical Fracture EOC to include people with fractures that are immobilized with a removable device, such as a splint or walking boot, and who meet all other criteria.
To promote the expansion of eligibility criteria and the Non-Surgical Fracture EOC, WSIB has launched an orientation video on their website.
Health care professionals are encouraged to screen each person prior to delivering care in the Non-Surgical Fracture EOC to ensure that they have an allowed claim and meet all of the program criteria. The person receiving care must:
- have a fracture that did not require surgical intervention;
- be medically cleared to begin rehabilitation;
- no longer have a fracture that is casted or immobilized OR have a fracture that is immobilized with a removable device (such as a splint, walking boot, etc.);
- begin rehabilitation within four months (16 weeks) from the date of injury;
- not have any additional injuries that prevent participation in this EOC;
- be at work (regular or modified),or are not working;
- and not be hospitalized
Implications for Occupational Therapists
While most workers who are eligible for the Non-surgical Fracture Episode of Care will be seen in physiotherapy clinics, occupational therapists may work with clients to support functional rehabilitation and attention to return-to-work. Occupational therapists working within this Episode of Care funding model should familiarize themselves with the new eligibility criteria.
