Webinar Description:
Insomnia disorder is exceedingly common in occupational therapy settings and adversely and significantly impacts quality of life. When left untreated, it increases the likelihood of developing mental disorders and interferes with the treatment of other conditions. Insomnia presents in a myriad of health/behavioural settings, not just sleep specialty centres (Bhaskar, Hemavathy & Prasad, 2016), so providers across disciplines, including occupational therapy, need to have up-to-date knowledge on evidence-based approaches.
In January 2025, Health Ontario released the new quality standard of care for insomnia and mandated Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) as the frontline treatment. CBT-I is a highly effective intervention, whether insomnia occurs on its own or alongside other conditions. You will learn about the importance of integrating CBT-I into occupational settings, debunk prevalent myths like “everyone needs 8 hours of sleep” and “sleep hygiene is an effective insomnia treatment,” and discover what strategies address insomnia.
By the end of this webinar you will:
- Identify evidence-based approaches for chronic insomnia.
- Discern between causes of acute versus chronic insomnia.
- Explain the three things that cause chronic insomnia.
- Connect the three causes to effective treatment strategies.
