Webinar Description:
Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are a group of genetic connective tissue disorders affecting up to 1 in 500 children and youth worldwide. These conditions present with multi-systemic manifestations and can co-occur with conditions such as autism, often resulting in significant challenges in occupational participation. Children and youth with EDS may experience difficulty in self-care, school tasks, social engagement, and other areas of occupational participation, which can contribute to secondary anxiety and depression. Early occupational therapy intervention is critical to support functional participation, enhance mental and physical well-being, and improve long-term outcomes. Yet, research and practical guidance for occupational therapists (OTs) interventions with this population remain extremely limited.
This webinar will present findings from an integrative literature review and a survey of pediatric OTs exploring current knowledge, awareness, and practices in supporting children and youth with EDS. You will gain insight into the existing gaps in evidence-based practice, the need for targeted occupational therapy interventions, and the resource and support needs of practitioners. The webinar will highlight considerations to enhance occupational participation and engagement in daily occupations for children and youth with EDS. You will leave equipped with practical knowledge to inform clinical decision-making, advocate for your clients, and contribute to the growing body of occupational therapy knowledge for this underserved population. This webinar will deepen your understanding of EDS, recognize the importance of early occupational therapy intervention, and explore actionable approaches to promote functional participation and long-term health and well-being for children and youth with EDS.
By the end of this webinar you will:
- Explain the key characteristics and clinical features of Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) relevant to pediatric occupational therapy practice.
- Analyze the potential impacts of EDS on occupational participation and psychosocial well-being in children and youth.
- Evaluate current evidence, knowledge, and practice gaps related to occupational therapy assessment and intervention for children and youth with EDS.
- Discuss occupational therapy strategies and interventions to support participation and engagement in daily occupations for children and youth with EDS.
