Developing Your Professional Voice in Medico Legal Work

Date and Time: May 6, 2026 | 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Eastern Time

Webinar Description:
This session is intended for Occupational Therapists seeking to transition into medico-legal and consulting roles. It aims to provide practical guidance on how to shift from a clinical, client-centered approach to an objective, evidence-based expert role required in legal and insurance contexts. Participants will learn how to develop clear, neutral, and defensible documentation, including how to structure reports, use appropriate medico-legal language, and support opinions with objective findings and evidence-based rationale. Key differences between clinical and medical-legal documentation will be outlined, with a focus on consistency, transparency, and professional credibility. The session will also address ethical considerations, including maintaining independence, managing referral bias, and understanding role boundaries when working with insurers and legal teams. This session is particularly relevant for those involved in or seeking to get involved in Catastrophic Impairment and Life Care Planning assessments.

By the end of this webinar you will:

  • Differentiate between the clinical/treating OT role and the expert consultant role within the medico-legal framework.
  • Identify key competencies and standards that establish credibility as an expert witness or consultant.
  • Learn to develop structured, defensible documentation templates for assessment reports.
  • Integrate evidence-based practice and objective data into medico-legal opinion writing.
  • Recognize ethical, procedural, and professional boundaries unique to the expert role.
