Webinar Description:
Learn all about a new practice resource “Sleep Hygiene & OT: A Compendium”. This resource was developed following an extensive scoping review of the research evidence as part of an evidence-based practice project. Topics covered include the history of sleep and occupational therapy, current conceptualizations, the science, sleep theories, sleep hygiene assessments, and sleep hygiene interventions. The resource is applicable across the lifespan, from pediatrics to older adults.
By the end of this webinar you will:
- Recognize the importance of addressing sleep as an occupation and its relationship to health, meaningful engagement, and well-being across the lifespan.
- Describe key findings, including evidence-based assessment and intervention approaches to support sleep hygiene in occupational therapy practice.
- Apply concepts and tools from the practice resource and webinar to enhance clinical reasoning and integrate sleep-focused strategies into occupational therapy practice.

Alexandra Hannam is an upcoming graduate, set to receive her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from McMaster University in fall 2025. Her clinical experience includes two placements in acute care, one in outpatient pediatrics, and more recently, one in outpatient mental health. Alexandra's interest in sleep hygiene is rooted in both personal lived experience and her direct observation of how sleep affects daily functioning, particularly through her work with clients in past placements. She is passionate about mental health and health education and is eager to continue to advance her career. Alexandra strives to provide comprehensive, evidence-based care to current and future clients.
Angelica Despot is a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy candidate at McMaster University, graduating in fall 2025. Her clinical experience spans various settings including outpatient hand therapy, intensive care, student mental health and most recently, the auto insurance sector. Angelica’s interest in sleep hygiene began during her undergraduate degree in biology, where a course on sleep science sparked an interest in the role of sleep in overall well-being. Throughout her clinical placements, she observed how sleep was often overlooked, despite its role in recovery and daily function. This inspired a passion for empowering clients to achieve their goals by addressing foundational needs like sleep through client-centred, evidence-based care.
