This webinar will discuss the intersection between late-life transitions, driving, and community mobility. Following a brief overview of the role of occupational therapy with supporting out-of-home mobility within Ontario’s health and social sectors, including transportation, we will highlight key considerations for older adults, families, and others when it comes to participation and transportation in later life.

Session Topics:

  • To understand the impact of changes in driving and community mobility on health and quality of life in older adulthood.
  • To discuss existing, emerging, and potential opportunities for occupational therapists and others to support driving, community mobility, and out-of-home engagement.


About our Presenters:

Brenda Vrkljan
, PhD, OT Reg. (Ont.) is a Professor of Occupational Therapy in the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University where her program of research focuses on driving and community mobility in later life. She has led and co-leads several interdisciplinary and international projects aimed at facilitating mobility and participation in later life. Her research has been featured in the Globe and Mail, TVO, CBC, Zoomer, and CAA magazine.

Ruheena Sangrar, PhD, OT Reg. (Ont.) is a post-doctoral fellow at Laval University. Her research aims to promote community access and occupational engagement in older adulthood, with her doctoral thesis focused on developing and evaluating an evidence- and user-informed approach to refreshing older adults’ driving skills. She is also an educator in the occupational therapy programs at the University of Toronto and at McMaster University.
