Paediatric Feeding and Swallowing: Managing Complex Issues

The goal of this workshop is to provide therapists working with infants and children with complex feeding and swallowing problems a framework for the analysis of feeding issues and a toolkit of practical intervention strategies. The assessment and clinical presentation of different problems including motor, respiratory, sensory, gastro-intestinal and swallowing will be explored and demonstrated through video. Practical intervention strategies for different issues will be discussed and demonstrated with video. Finally, complex cases will be presented to consolidate learning and enhance problem solving. The content of this workshop reflects best practice and is based on an integration of information from the presenter’s extensive clinical experience as well as current evidence from the literature.
Sherna is an Occupational Therapist who has worked at the Hospital for Sick Children for the past 33 years. She has worked extensively with infants and children with complex feeding and swallowing issues in a variety of different programs within the hospital including paediatric medicine, complex care, cardiology, neonatal intensive care unit, gastroenterology and outpatient feeding clinics. She has presented numerous workshops both nationally and internationally and has published articles on pediatric feeding and swallowing. Sherna is co-author of 3 books: “OT’s Guide to Pediatric Videofluoroscopy” (1999), “Infant and Child Feeding and Swallowing: Occupational Therapy Assessment and Treatment” (2013) and “Infant and Child Feeding and Swallowing: Occupational Therapy Assessment and Treatment, 2nd Edition” (2022).
