After a stroke or brain injury, there can be cognitive and perceptual difficulties in addition to physical impairments which significantly impact a client's ability to perform functional tasks. As Occupational Therapists, it can be difficult to figure out how best to manage our time so that we are being holistic and finding a role for the more involved upper extremity (UE) while also addressing a client's cognitive and perceptual impairments.
This one day workshop will present NDT principles related to incorporating the more involved UE into cognitive and perceptual treatment options by using the UE in an active support role. The course will provide an opportunity to explore practical tips to engage and challenge the UE in active support while being creative on how to set up the environment to complete cognitive and perceptual tasks.
The course format will include a lecture, with a large focus on labs to aid in assessment and facilitation of the trunk and UE in active support, as well as to problem solve how to set up the environment and facilitate the UE in active support during cognitive and perceptual treatment.
